Boots on the Ground

by Dana Skully and the Tiger Sharks

/

about

This song was written as an "un-paper" for an Applied Anthropology master's course at IUPUI. This song has references and quotes from authors and articles reviewed in the course, most notably:

“Telling the Story Straight: Black Feminist Intellectual Thought in Anthropology” by Lynn Bolles
“Dark anthropology and its others: Theory since the eighties” by Sherry B. Ortner
“The Decolonizing Generation: (Race and) Theory in Anthropology since the Eighties” by Jafari Sinclaire Allen and Ryan Cecil Jobson
“The Case for Letting Anthropology Burn: Sociocultural Anthropology in 2019” by Ryan Cecil Jobson
“Anthropology Matters” Speech by Leith Mullings

The song itself is an interpretation of the literature about anthropology as a discipline and its roles in decolonization, praxis, and community collaboration. It also reflects Dana's thoughts on anthropology as activism.

lyrics

In one ear and out the other
And the praxis doesn’t turn out right
We have to do more than just respect one another
Bridge the gaps and shine a light
Onto every situation that’s been testing all their patience
Learn from an intersectional approach
We’re at a timely juncture to finally fight these structures
And nothing here’s beyond reproach

You can try to switch it up (yeah)
Or just let it burn down
Elevate a different voice (yeah)
Listen for the thunder of boots on the ground

“Anthropology will be decolonized or it will be nothing at all”
This is why we need to strategize, a plant with damaged roots will never stand tall
Pushing past othering, miseducation, and omission of voices pressed against the margins
We need to use our skills to organize, be anti-racist accomplices, building networks and not hiding in our offices

To bear witness, then, is to critically inhabit the world in the wake of terror
Empowering people through knowledge is more than just decolonial trial and error
Find ways to have faith and still be questioning, Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will
